NH Gasfitting License Exam Requirements and Information

NOTICE:
The Mechanical Board has approved the following states to take the Fuel Gas Service Technician Exam thru a standing order that allows for licensees below that meet the following criteria :

Massachusetts Journeyman Plumber approved 9/14/2022
Connecticut S-1 or S-2 Unlimited Heating Piping Cooling Contractor License approved 12/23/2022
 

GASFITTING EXAMS CAN NOT BE TAKEN ONLINE
  • The address for the exams are 
  • NH School of Mechanical Trades 7 Perimeter Rd Manchester NH
  • NH School of Mechanical Trades109 Towle Farm Rd, Hampton, NH 
  • All Exams are held Monday thru Friday at 10 AM only
  • Weekends and Holidays are not available.
  • Candidates are required to bring a 2018 NFPA 54 and NFPA 58 2017 
  • The fee is $100.00 for the GPI Gasfitting exam (exam fee does not include the license fee)
  • The fee is $100.00 for the Equipment Installers Gasfitting exam (exam fee does not include the license fee)
  • The fee is $100.00 for the Service Technicians Gasfitting exam (exam fee does not include the license fee)

NH Gasfitters Online is approved as a testing agency for the following exams:
  • GPI Gasfitting Exam Exam
  • Equipment Installers Gasfitting Exam
  • Service Technician Gasfitting Exam

Requirements for All Gasfitting Exams

  • Proof of positive identification through a government issued approved ID
  • A copy of the certificate of completion for gasfitting trainee program
  • Proof of the requirements to sit for the gasfitting exam that you are applying for
  • The 2018 NFPA 54 and a 2017 NFPA 58 Code book 

​Also note that if you are a no-show or call for your confirmed scheduled exam date and you decide to re-schedule in the future you will be required to call us and pre-pay before we will schedule a future exam.

The NH GPI Gasfitting Exam shall consist of no less than 100 questions with a maximum three (3) hour time limit. The passing grade shall be 70% or higher. Questions shall consist of true or false, multiple choice, fill in the blank, or a series of each.

  • Basic gas theory involving a thorough understanding of the physical properties and characteristics of propane and natural gas;
  • Reading and interpretation of fuel gas piping plans and drawings;
  • Determining proper fuel gas piping systems using appropriate sizing tables and charts;
  • Piping installation involving review of gas pipe sizing, gas pipe material selection, proper installation of underground and above ground fuel gas piping supply and distribution systems, placing a fuel gas system in service including purging, initial pressure testing and leak check of gas distribution piping and appliances;
  • The documentation of fuel gas piping system pressure testing, leak checking including customer notification as to the safety procedures and recognition of fuel gas odors;
  • The application of NFPA-54, National Fuel Gas Code, and NFPA-58 the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code
  • RSA 153:16-b 153:27 thru 153:38 and Saf-Mec 100-600

  • Placing propane and natural gas appliances equipment into service while controlling propane/air mixtures for proper combustion;
  • Verification for proper operation of safety controls and devices
  • The proper utilization of combustion analyzing equipment with respect to applicable codes and manufacturer’s installations;
  • The application of NFPA 54, National Fuel Gas Code, and NFPA 58 the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code
  • RSA 153:16-b 153:27 thru 153:38 and Saf-Mec 100-600

  • Liquefied propane and natural gas appliance venting including venting categories, selection and use of proper venting materials, vent sizing and clearance and installation
  • Placing propane and natural gas appliances equipment into service while controlling propane/air mixtures for proper combustion
  • Verification for proper operation of safety controls and devices
  • The proper utilization of combustion analyzing equipment with respect to applicable codes and manufacturer’s installation instructions
  • Troubleshooting electrical circuits and control devices while measuring electrical quantities using an electrical meter
  • Identifying operating characteristics and components of common appliance safety and sensing devices including the testing and replacement of operating controls;
  • Gas pressure measurements including supply and appliance burner pressure detection;
  • Ignition safety systems including the 100 percent pilot safety shut-off and other electronic safety shut-off devices;
  • Flue gas analysis and carbon monoxide detection;
  • Interpret gas appliance equipment wiring diagrams to determine the sequence of operation of any given appliance;
  • Fuel gas equipment maintenance, inspection, heat exchanger inspection, and routine service requirements;
  • Application of NFPA 54, National Fuel Gas Code, and NFPA 58 the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code
  • RSA 153:16-b 153:27 thru 153:38 and Saf-Mec 100-600
